Driveway bollards

So you have just spent your well earned money on a new car, caravan or some other nice stuff for your home and you want to provide some security protection on your driveway. But what options for driveway security do you have and what is the best type of security bollard to use?

Based on my experience of designing and providing impact tested security bollards, I have created a very basic guide to "driveway bollards" to help the home owner determine what their best solution might be.

Fold down parking bollards £30-£75 Fold down bollards have very little security characteristics. Other than a visual deterrent, they are very weak and easily defeated. Fold down bollards are normally bolted to the surface of the ground and would "fall over" if hit with minimal force. These should normally be used for the control of car parking only and not for the security of your property.

Lift out security anti-ram bollards (removable) £100-£150 Lift out removable bollards offer a good level of security compared to their price. If you choose lift out removable bollards, make sure you select a product that is at least 5mm wall and is installed circa 400mm in the ground. Products installed at under 300mm deep do not give you enough resistance if the product is impacted with a vehicle. If you choose lift out removable bollards, make sure you buy and use a decent security lock! These should normally be installed allowing gaps between of no more than 1.5m - preferably 1.2m. They are available in a range of widths, square or round and at different heights.

Lift out security anti-ram hoop barriers (removable) £200-£300 Security hoops offer a good level of security. They can easily be removed and have an integral security lock so no padlock is required. If you have more than 1, you can them set up so that the same key works with them all. Just a single hoop can protect an area of circa 4m. These should normally be installed allowing gaps between of no more than 1.5m - preferably 1.2m.

Telescopic security anti-ram bollards £150-£400 Telescopic bollards offer a good level of security. These can be dropped into the ground when not in use and easily lifted when security is required. They have an integral security lock so no padlock is required. If you have more than 1, you can them set up so that the same key works with them all. These are available in different heights and diameters, painted or stainless steel. These should normally be installed allowing gaps between of no more than 1.5m - preferably 1.2m.
